MRG: From Smart Solutions to Smart City Societies
On-going developments of smart cities can be considered as a continuous process in which new solutions are developed; for example replacing carbon heavy options and recycling waste and pollution as energy. Municipal utilities have different priorities and different challenges than their investor-owned counterparts. Today, relatively static infrastructures all over the world are rapidly going through urbanization and are putting enormous stress on city resources and infrastructure. Many major cities are at a crossroads; many are nearing the point at which they could easily become overwhelmed by issues related to crime, congestion, and public health and safety. Thousands of smart city projects are underway worldwide, but hurdles like technology, financing, policy, and consumer engagement remain.

The questions that need quick answers are how to lower these barriers to adoption through education and outreach, including a "readiness guide" that provides collaborative roadmaps for a city on the most effective ways to move forward. These require a coordinated ecosystem to be put in place. Furthermore, as cities become smarter, the amount of data the city produces grows exponentially. Information is constantly being generated from traffic lights, sensors, meters, computers and more. Currently, the information is sent to different locations and organizations; however utilities have successfully utilized advanced analytics programs to add a level of intelligence and predictive value.

What are the lessons learnt? What kinds of polices need to be imposed on smart buildings as part of a large sustainability initiative? How would you build a future city?
